In 2015, all United Nation Member States committed to the Sustainable Development Goals as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.
Central to achieving these ambitious goals is a call to empower ALL young people with the resources needed to achieve their full potential, regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation or socio-economic status. Our greatest weapon in the war on poverty, inequality and social injustice is knowledge. Providing opportunities for youth to access quality education results in a more diverse, forward-thinking and socially responsible generation of leaders in the near future. By empowering individuals with the skills and qualifications needed to engage in the fourth industrial revolution, we harness the power to drive economic and social transformation for individuals and communities, as well as on a national, continental and global scale.
At Regenesys Foundation, we believe that education is the greatest equaliser, the most important tool with which society can lift people out of poverty, give them a purpose in life, and help them become productive members of a more equal, sustainable and peaceful future.
According to Stats SA, more than half of South African youths aged 18-24 do not have the resources needed to access higher education.
The implications are clear and frightening:
- The skills drain in developing countries will continue to hinder our ability to compete on the international stage
- Unskilled, unemployed youth are left with no legitimate means to support themselves and their families, increasing the risk of crime for survival
- Developing countries are likely to remain burdened by rising debt and budget deficits as the number of indigent youth rises and the tax base shrinks
- Children born into poverty have little to no opportunity to improve their lives, reinforcing cycles of poverty and inequality in our society
The triple scourge of inequality, widespread poverty, and lawlessness will continue into future generations unless we act NOW!
